During trading today, both the Basic Materials sector (XLB) and the S&P500 showed little movement.

The ETF, as a proxy for the sector, tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past week. Entering today's trading, XLB was down 3.7% over the last seven trading days while the S&P 500 climbed -2.4%.

Amyris (AMRS) rose 18.7% to close at $3.49, cross its 50-day moving average of $3.10 and 200-day moving average of $5.50.

Universal Stainless & Alloy Products (USAP) rose 86.6% to close at $39.19, approaching its 50-day moving average of $39.79. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $40.25. Cabot (CBT) fell 3.3% to close at $39.35, moving closer to its 50-day moving average of $38.58. Also, the stock moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $38.77.

Northern Technologies International (NTIC) was one of the sector's big losers, as its price dropped 12% (-$1.43) to close at $10.52. 30,267 shares of the stock moved. The stock traded between $10.27 and $11.11.

Increasing 7.1% (+72 cents) to close at $10.82, American Pacific Corporation (APFC) was a major gainer in the sector. Today, 1,046 shares traded hands. The stock traded in a range of $10.19 to $10.99.

Weyerhaeuser (WY) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $22.81 to top the previous high of $22.73.

Barrick Gold Corporation (ABX) hit a new 52-week low today, hitting $34.47 to fall below the previous low of $34.82.
