The Energy sector (XLE) showed little movement on a trading day that saw S&P 500 fall 0.9%.

Although it went in the opposite direction of the market today, the ETF tracked farther from the overall market today than over the past week. Entering today's trading, XLE was down 2.2% over the last seven trading days while the S&P 500 was down 1.7%.

Apco Oil & Gas International (APAGF) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 7.3% (-$1.55) to close at $19.80, as 31,224 shares moved. The stock traded between $19.10 and $21.78.

Chesapeake Energy (CHK) declined 6.5% to close at $18.69, moving below its 50-day moving average of $17.62 and 200-day moving average of $20.46.

Alon USA Energy (ALJ) rose 1.7% to close at $8.51, getting closer to its 200-day moving average or $8.85.

Dawson Geophysical Company (DWSN) was a significant gainer in the sector, rising 3.1%. The stock closed at $23.21 with 59,434 shares moving. The stock traded in a range of $22.43 to $23.43. The stock is down over the last three months, having fallen $8.94 (-27.8%) from $32.15 on April 12, 2012.
