The S&P 500 lost 0.2% while the Utilities sector (XLU) showed little movement during trading today.

Although it went in the opposite direction of the market today, the ETF tracked closer to the overall market today than over the past month. At the start of trading today, XLU was up 0.1% over the last thirty trading days while the S&P 500 was down 6.6%.

EDENOR (EDN) was a major loser in the sector. Its price dropped 6.9% (-17 cents) to close at $2.30, as 7,200 shares moved. The stock traded between $2.30 and $2.59.

Increasing 3.7% (+90 cents) to close at $25.06, Huaneng Power International (HNP) was a major gainer in the sector. Today, 98,237 shares traded hands. The stock traded in a range of $24.93 to $25.30. The stock has been on the rise in the last two months, up $2.57 (11.4%) from a price of $22.49 on April 2, 2012.

Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (CPK) rose 2.3% to close at $42.26, crossing its 50-day moving average of $41.80. Meanwhile, Oneok Partners (OKS) dropped 2% to close at $54.60, moving below its 200-day moving average or $54.95.

CPFL Energia (CPL) rose 2.2% to close at $24.30, approaching its 50-day moving average of $26.65. It has also moved closer to its 200-day moving average of $28.31. Covanta Holding Corporation (CVA) fell 0.9% to close at $15.64, moving down to 1.6% above its 200-day moving average of $15.40.

Wisconsin Energy (WEC) hit a new 52-week high today, reaching $37.97 to top the previous high of $37.67.
