Putting together a list of essentials for the first year in college can be overwhelming for incoming freshmen, especially considering most will be on their own for the first time without knowing exactly what to expect from dorm life. Here are seven items freshmen will need to start off the semester on the right foot and get settled into life at college.

1. Computer Necessities:

Whether students have a desktop, laptop or net book computer, having the right supplies is essential since they will be relying on their computer for most of their coursework. A power strip with a surge protector, a lap top lock, a document backup system and a flash drive for emailing large amounts of information or printing papers at the library will come in handy and help students protect their important assignments.

2. Voice Recorder:

Instead of scrambling to write down every detail of a lecture, a voice recorder can help make keep students on top of their studies. Students can also practice foreign language pronunciation skills and easily transcribe class material from audio notes into written notes or a study guide.

3. Dorm Room Toolkit:

A start up tool kit with a measuring tape, multiple different sized screw drivers, duct tape, a wrench and a flashlight can help in the case of DIY projects and repairs, as dorm furniture isn’t always the highest quality. Find out the dorm’s rules before hammering nails into the walls to avoid a hefty fine at the end of the year.

4. E-reader:

A light-weight alternative to lugging multiple books around on campus or having to go back to the dorm to get materials for the next class, e-readers can also help to make textbooks much more affordable. Some models even allow users to make page notes, surf the web and look up unfamiliar words.

5. First Aid Kit:

Having medical supplies in a pinch can be a lifesaver in the dorms: Band Aids, rubbing alcohol, aspirin and cold and flu medicine can provide fast relief, particularly when it’s the middle of the night before a big exam.

6. Extra Storage:

It’s a well known fact that dorm rooms are small, but incoming freshmen may not be totally aware of how little space they will actually have for their belongings—especially after factoring in a roommate’s stuff. Double closet rods, over the door shoe hangers and stackable containers that slide under the bed can make a huge difference when it comes to living comfortably.

7. Important Documents:

Entering college means increased responsibility and students on their own for the first time may not realize how important it is to have copies of their driver's license or state ID, health insurance card, social security card, and health records on hand. Keep all important documents and copies in a labeled folder for security and quick access.
