Despite the economic slowdown, some Major League Baseball franchises are still posting all-time high profits, proving baseball is America’s favorite pastime. Here are baseball's most valuable teams, according to Forbes.
New York Yankees
The Steinbrenner family bought this money-making mega sports franchise in 1973 for $10 million. The team has clinched more World Series titles than any other team in major league baseball, and is currently worth a colossal $1.7 billion, according Forbes.
Boston Red Sox
In 2002, John Henry and Thomas Werner bought the Sox’s for $380 million and now the team, which won the World Series in 2004 and broke its 86-year famine, is estimated to be worth $912 million.
Los Angeles Dodgers
Frank McCourt, which is currently making headlines over his divorce settlement, bought the Dodgers in 2004 for $355 million. Now the team is currently worth $800 million, according to Forbes.
In 2009, the Ricketts family bought the team which plays in Wrigley Field for $700 million, now it’s worth $773 million, according to Forbes.
New York Mets
Owners Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz bought the team for $391 million in 2002. Despite recent lackluster ticket sales, the team is currently worth $747 million, according to Forbes.
In 1981, a limited partnership led by David Montgomery purchased the team for $30 million. After years of strong campaigns and solid performances on the diamond, this money-making organization is currently worth $609 million.
San Francisco Giants
The reigning 2010 World Series champion team was bought in 1993 for $100 million and is now worth $563 million.
In 2010 Ray Davis and Bob Simpson beat out Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban in a bankruptcy court auction to purchase the team. The team was bought for $593 million and is currently worth $561 million, according to Forbes.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Arturo Moreno bought the team for $184 million in 2003. Despite only recording 80 wins last season, the team continues to profit and is currently worth $554 million, according to Forbes.
Chicago White Sox
Owner Jerry Reinsdorf purchased the team in 1981 for $20 million and it’s currently valued at $526 million, according to Forbes.
