The unofficial start to summer kicks off this weekend with Memorial Day. The holiday was established after the Civil War in 1868 and called Decoration Day. It became an official national holiday in 1971 and is celebrated across the country with barbecues, parades and services honoring those who died while serving in the U.S. military.
