We Tested Out the World's First 3D Fitness Tracker

From counting calories to reaching those 10,000 steps a day, Americans have been obsessed with tracking their every fitness move.

Now, a new Silicon Valley fitness startup is looking to take things to the next level with the world’s first 3D fitness tracker for consumers.

“We wanted to create a device that you can visualize your progress far quicker than what you see on a scale or what your eyes will show you in a mirror,” says Farhad Farahbakhshian, chief executive officer and co-founder of Naked Labs.

Starting today, the device is available for pre-order at $499. The fitness system includes a full-length mirror, a scale and the Naked mobile app.

“Weight without content is meaningless,” adds Farahbakhshian. “With our 3D scan you can see your body’s dimensions and have an active 3D body avatar.”

Naked’s 3D progress map shows changes to your body geometry over days, weeks and months. Significant changes are also highlighted in different colors, so you can note areas of your body where you need to improve and areas where you’re succeeding.

The scanner uses a custom configuration of Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) depth sensors to create the 3D image while your body is rotating around a turntable. The progress takes about 20 seconds.

“Imagine someone throwing sand at your body and seeing actually how the sand hits it, then putting each of those images together and building a body model. That’s how naked works,” Farahbakhshian says.

And, the scanner isn’t just for fitness enthusiasts either. Farahbakhshian says they have used it to track pregnancies month by month for women to see how their bodies are changing.

“People who have more knowledge about their body on a regular basis are able to make better decisions about their health.”
