Watch for These 5 Cars at the New York Auto Show

Luxury brands, sports cars and crossovers will dominate the New York International Auto Show this week.

After a Detroit auto show in January that spotlighted high-end cars, the New York event is another opportunity for luxury buyers to see what’s coming from the top names in the industry. Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Buick and Genesis are all slated to unveil future models. Mercedes-Benz will have a grand total of five global debuts at the show, including three AMG high-performance models.

Included in the lineup of sports cars will be the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The next Audi R8 Spyder supercar is reportedly on its way to New York, too.

Small SUVs, now the most popular vehicle segment in the U.S., should be well-represented with new models from Jeep and several luxury names such as Buick and Acura.

Here are five cars that should generate a lot of buzz:

  • 1. Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

    The Camaro ZL1 is a supercharged, 640-horsepower version of Chevrolet’s iconic muscle car. General Motors (GM) promises the Camaro ZL1 will be one of the most advanced sports coupes worldwide.

    “The Camaro ZL1 is designed to excel at everything,” said Mark Reuss, GM’s executive vice president of global product development. “It will compare well to any sports coupe, at any price and in any setting.”

    GM built a new supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine for the Camaro ZL1, which can be equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a new 10-speed automatic. Other features include standard Recaro front seats, a sueded steering wheel and Chevrolet’s Performance Data Recorder for track-goers.

    The Camaro ZL1 will go on sale in late 2016. Pricing has yet to be revealed. The current model starts at $55,505.

  • 2. Alfa Romeo Giulia

    Alfa Romeo, the Italian luxury brand owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCAU), is bringing its new 2017 Giulia lineup to the New York auto show. Alfa Romeo said three versions of the midsize sedan will be on display: the Giulia, Giulia Ti and Giulia Quadrifoglio, the top-of-the-line model that will offer 505 horsepower.

    Pictured above is the 2017 Giulia destined for sale in Europe, where orders will begin next month. Sales of the U.S.-spec Giulia debuting in New York will start with the Quadrifoglio in the third quarter of 2016. It will cost around $70,000. The entry-level Giulia, likely starting around $40,000, is expected by year’s end.

    The Giulia is a significant step for Alfa Romeo, as the brand continues to revive its presence in America. Alfa Romeo currently only sells the sporty 4C coupe in the U.S. through Maserati dealers. As for Maserati, the North American version of the $70,000 Levante, the brand’s first-ever SUV, will be on display.

  • 3. Buick Encore

    Buick will likely show off an updated Encore, the GM brand’s compact SUV. The design is expected to resemble the Opel Mokka pictured above.

    The Encore was Buick’s best-selling model in 2015, just ahead of the midsize Enclave. Its debut this week follows news that Buick will begin shipping the Envision crossover from China starting this summer. The Envision fills a gap in Buick’s U.S. lineup between the Encore and Enclave.

  • 4. Genesis New York Concept

    Genesis, which recently became a standalone luxury brand for Hyundai, will introduce the aptly named New York Concept on March 23. Genesis said the concept will showcase the design direction of its future products. In a teaser image and video released last week, the sedan appears to have sleek styling and the usual large grille.

    “The New York Concept is a progressive concept car that showcases the design quality of the brand. With its expressive volumes and refined design, the New York Concept truly embodies the athletic elegance which characterizes Genesis products,” said Manfred Fitzgerald, head of the Genesis brand.

  • 5. Nissan GT-R

    Nissan’s low-volume supercar (sales hit 1,105 units in 2015) has gone through multiple changes since it was first introduced to the U.S. in 2008. The Japanese automaker has also released special editions like the GT-R Nismo.

    Another facelift for the GT-R will be revealed at the New York show. Details are scarce, but industry watchers believe Nissan will freshen up the design and upgrade the GT-R’s current 545-horsepower V6.
