“I am hoping to get the libertarian nomination for President in 2016,” Johnson said.

Johnson said one of his biggest concerns is the U.S. budget.

“I think the biggest problem facing this country is the $20 trillion debt that we will have when Obama leaves office,” he said. “Government is too big, it’s unwieldy, it’s out of control. We need to get control. I think term limits will go a long way toward achieving that.”

When asked if his run as a third-party candidate would take votes away from the GOP nominee Johnson, a former Republican himself, said:  “I think that is conventional wisdom. I think a lot of people hold to that belief. In fact, that’s not the case at all. When it comes to libertarians, libertarians draw as many votes from Democrats as they do Republicans.”

Johnson, who’s sued the Commission on Presidential Debates, wants to have the opportunity to join the Democratic and Republican nominees in presidential debates.

“If the Libertarian nominee for president--and I hope that's me-- is in the presidential debates, I think that lot of things can change in this country,” he said. “We believe that the lawsuit against the presidential debate commission has the possibility of changing politics in America today.”
