“They’re better- period,” Agassi said. “Everybody gets better. Anything that’s quantifiable in sports you can see the evolution. In tennis it’s not as quantifiable generation to generation, but there are just rules of engagement that apply that you can’t deny.”

The eight-time Grand Slam winner broke down what has changed since his playing days.

“The speed that they cover, the ability to turn defense into offense… just the spin that they’re playing with alone would redefine how I would engage playing against them or would almost render some of the things I did very difficult to do,” he said.

At this year’s U.S. Open tournament, a current star is pursing history. Serena Williams could tie Agassi’s wife, Steffi Graf, with 22 Grand Slam titles. The two have competed against one another in the past, but Agassi said she is a “huge fan of Serena.”

“She competed against her for years and has loved watching her over the years,” he said. “Watching Serena accomplish what she’s about to-- hopefully she does it—is remarkable for anybody to see in their lifetime, so she’s [Graf] thrilled about it.”
