A Behind-the-Scenes Look as the World Arrives in Davos
Powder white snow and blazing sunshine are greeting the more than 2,500 world leaders and business stars atop the Swiss Alps.
Today the big rush to register at the 45th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum is in full swing. (1,500 CEOs, 45 heads of state, 14 Nobel laureates, 9 European Union commissioners and 500 members of the international media are descending upon the Swiss village of Davos for this year’s event.)
This year's theme at WEF, as it's known, is "The New Global Context," which is actually appropriate considering how much has changed since the summer of global discontent. With the rise of Islamic militant group ISIS, the Israeli/Gaza conflict, Russian aggression and the extreme drop in oil prices super-imposed over the spike in market volatility, each participant here hopes to turn into a problem-solver.
There is no other event on the planet like the one in Davos. The mere fact that all these leaders hike up the mountain to Europe's highest city (and have been for the last 45 years) to have these conversations speaks volumes. But it's also a major opportunity for business leaders to do networking at hyper-speed. Some of the world's largest and even smallest companies have struck lucrative deals in the wake of what often starts as a conversation or two inside Davos' Congress Center.
