Samsung Said to Pick Intel Chips for New Galaxy Tablet

GERMANY

Samsung Electronics reportedly has chosen to use an Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) processor in a new Galaxy tablet.

Reuters said Samsung picked Intel’s Clover Trail+ mobile chip for at least one version of its Galaxy Tab 3, an upcoming 10.1-inch tablet that will compete with Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad. Galaxy tablets run on Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android operating system.

Samsung and Intel declined to comment.

The move is a big score for the U.S. chipmaker, as Samsung has previously used chips made by U.K.-based ARM Holdings (NASDAQ:ARMH). Samsung’s ATIV tablets, which run on Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows 8, are built with Intel processors.

Samsung will unveil new ATIV tablets using Intel chips at a June 20 event in London, Reuters reported, although it’s unclear whether the new Galaxy Tab will also debut at the event.

Venture Beat and other blogs reported last week that Intel’s Clover Trail+ chip would be used in  Samsung’s upcoming tablet.

Shares of Intel were up roughly 1% at $24.47 Friday afternoon.
