LivingSocial Cyber-Attack Impacts 50M Customers

Daily deals website LivingSocial experienced a massive cyber-attack on its computer systems, exposing information tied to 50 million customer accounts.

The cyber-attack was able to uncover names, emails, birthdates and encrypted passwords. Financial and credit card information was not accessed.

Online retail giant Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) owns a 29% stake in the Washington, D.C.-based company, which was notifying customers on its homepage to change their passwords in the wake of the hack.

“We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate this issue,” Chief Executive Tim O'Shaughnessy said in an internal email.

The hack of LivingSocial is the latest in the string of high-profile attacks. Twitter has dealt with hacks of several notable accounts, while other companies such as LinkedIn (NYSE:LNKD) also dealt with unauthorized access of customer information.
