Small Business of the Day: Mama Mahoney Creations

Who: Janice Mahoney, 41, @mamamahoney

What: Hand-sewn quilted bags

When: 2008

How: Mahoney worked as a preschool teacher before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She began sewing at the age of 10, and said she was inspired to start up again upon being frustrated with the bags she saw for sale in stores. Mahoney started to give her handmade bags as gifts to friends and family, who encouraged her to sell them online.

"Right now I am designing a custom line for a local spa, which will be my first retail experience," she said.

Where: Denver, Colo.

Biggest lesson learned from a customer: "To double-check," Mahoney said. "Because I do custom orders, I make sure they know exactly what they want and have everything in writing."
