Verizon Wireless experienced an issue with its newest-generation data service early Wednesday and is working to resolve it, the biggest U.S. wireless carrier confirmed.

The company says the issue relates to its 4G LTE service, which is its newest and fastest mobile data service. Its older data system, called 3G, phone calls and text messaging were unaffected by the outage, the company said. It was not immediately clear how many customers were impacted.
A slew of users stretching from New York City to San Francisco began posting to social-media website Twitter in the early morning hours saying they were unable to utilize the biggest U.S. wireless carrier's data service, which enables access to the Internet, e-mail and a wide range of other non-calling related tools. Indeed, a search of Twitter messages that include Verizon's support account, @VZWSupport, yields a lengthy stream of messages from customers reaching out for support related to this outage.
