Ford Expanding Smartphone Sync to 2012 Models

A few more Ford (NYSE:F) vehicles will soon be able to connect with smartphones as the automaker starts expanding its on-board applications to 2012 models in an effort to meet rising demand.

The Fusion sedan, F-150 pickup trucks and the Expedition SUV will join the Ford Fiesta in using Ford Sync communication and entertainment to connect to smartphones, according to media reports.

The Sync AppLink option is available across the Ford and Lincoln lineup as a $400 option on some models and is standard on others.

Smartphones continue to overtake feature phones in the U.S., and Ford, citing a recent study, said two-thirds of those customers want to use them in their cars.

The sync option features hands-free calling, turn-by-turn directions, 911 assist, music search, vehicle health report, personalized daily information, traffic alerts and audible test messages, among others.
