The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits rose last week, but remains consistent with a labor market that is steadily adding jobs. Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs across the U.S., increased by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 267,000 in the week ended September 19, the Labor Department said Thursday.
