U.S. Nuclear Regulator Meets With Japanese Officials

The head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission met Japanese officials in Tokyo on Monday to assess the battle to contain the crisis at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, and offer U.S. support.

"The unprecedented challenge before us remains serious and our best experts remain fully engaged to help Japan address the situation," Gregory Jaczko said in a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

"Our nuclear experts are working closely with their Japanese counterparts, and we both continue to share expert analysis as we move forward to address this challenge," he said.

The NRC sent a team of people to Tokyo to support the embassy and Japanese regulators after the plant was damaged in a March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Jaczko met senior officials from the Japanese government and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Jaczko is slated to testify to a Senate committee in Washington on Wednesday and a House of Representatives hearing on Thursday.
