Republican Politicians Love Wearing These Belts

As the 2016 election heats up, voters and candidates are looking to see how they can show patriotic pride. For many, this pride comes in the form of what you wear.

Men’s accessories company Smathers & Branson, founded by Peter Smathers Carter and Austin Branson during their senior year at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME, is a favorite among politicians. Their needlepoint belts have been worn by Arizona Senator John McCain, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former President Bill Clinton, and former Presidents George W. Bush and George H.W. Bush.

The Bethesda, MD-based company might only be 11 years old, but the brand has amassed a loyal following that not only includes politicians but also athletes such as New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning and his brother Denver Broncos Quarterback Peyton Manning, retired golfer Arnold Palmer and retired NBA player Penny Hardaway.

According to Smathers & Branson, this is the first time that the brand is seeing a spike in sales of their politically-themed products in the year prior to an election. Normally, sales pick up during an election year. In addition, political belt sales for the brand are up over 50% this year.

“Our patriotic theme is our best-selling theme hands down” says Peter Smathers Carter, one of the brand’s co-founders.

Both President Bushes and President Clinton have been spotted wearing the brand’s American flag belt.

And Smathers & Branson was even commissioned by Bush 41 (George H.W. Bush) to create an exclusive, limited edition 41 hat where a percentage of the profits went to his presidential library. Smathers & Branson says this was one of the best selling hats on the website.
