Christie, Huckabee Put IRS on Chopping Block

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee put the IRS on the chopping block to kick off the first FOX Business Network/Wall Street Journal Republican presidential primary debate.

While describing actions he would take to support job growth, Gov. Christie pledged to “make the tax code fair, flatter and simpler,” adding that the tax code is “rigged for the rich.” The two-term governor of the Garden State also believes all Americans should pay lower tax rates and be able to file their tax returns in 15 minutes.

“And by the way, the good thing, I'll be able to fire a whole bunch of IRS agents once we do that,” Gov. Christie said.

Gov. Huckabee echoed those remarks, saying, “We don't reduce the IRS. We get rid of the IRS.”

“We completely eliminate it because the government has no business knowing how much money we make and how we made it,” Gov. Huckabee added.

Fellow GOP candidate Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas has supported abolishing the IRS. Cruz recently called it the “single most important tax reform.”

Cruz will be on the stage for the main debate at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday on the FOX Business Network and FOXBusiness.com.
