Border with Canada easy to cross illegally: agent

While the U.S. border with Mexico is a key area of concern for illegal immigration, National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd said the northern border with Canada can also present some problems.

“We had an event with Sen. Ted Cruz over the weekend, and then one of my colleagues told him you have to be dumb if you get caught on the Northern border,” Judd told FOX Business’ Stuart Varney on the “Varney & Co.” program. “We just don’t have enough resources up on the northern border to fully patrol.”

President Donald Trump has spoken about emulating Canada’s “merit-based” immigration policy, but Judd said rising costs give smugglers a reason to look to the northern border.

“Anybody can fly into Canada and receive a three-day visitor visa, which would then allow them to come down,” he said. “So if the cost is right, they will use the Northern border.”

On Monday, the Justice Department charged 11 members of the immigrant caravan from Central America with illegally entering the U.S. But Judd said there are dozens more who have unlawfully crossed the border.

“This whole myth that the people are only coming here to go through our port of entry and seek asylum … just isn’t true,” he said,

Judd added that the number of illegal attempts to cross the border with Mexico has increased significantly since April 2017.
