Barbara Bush remembered: She was ‘one of a kind’
Kristan King Nevins, a former chief of staff to Barbara Bush, remembers the beloved wife, mother and former first lady as “one of a kind.”
Bush, who was known for her candor, died at her home in Houston on Tuesday at age 92.
“What you saw on the outside was exactly what she was in the inside,” Nevins told FOX Business’ David Asman on Wednesday. “She didn’t put airs on, she didn’t mince words. She came from a generation that saw a lot of change in this country.”
Nevins said the former first lady was always honest and upfront with her thoughts.
“She certainly always expressed those thoughts with love and the full exposure of support and wanting to be honest with you so you could make the best decision for yourself,” she said.
When Nevins was thinking about what she would do after departing as Bush’s chief of staff, the former first lady asked Nevins when she was going to start a family.
“The most important thing you can do is raise a family,” Nevins remembers Bush telling her. “So needless to say, the first time that I was expecting, she was one of the first phone calls that I made.”
Former President George W. Bush reflected on the life and legacy of his mother, calling her passing the “end of a beautiful life.”
She was the first woman after Abigail Adams to be both the wife and mother of a U.S. president.
“She truly believes there’s an afterlife, that she’ll be wonderfully received in the arms of a loving god,” Bush told FOX Business’ Maria Bartiromo during an interview on Wednesday. “And therefore did not fear death. And as a result of her soul being comforted on the deathbed, my soul is comforted.”
