US stocks move between slight gains and losses in early trading; Kate Spade jumps on earnings

U.S. stocks are moving between slight gains and losses in early trading.

Kate Spade, a maker of premium handbags, jumped 9 percent after reporting earnings and revenue that came in well ahead of what analysts were forecasting.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell a fraction of a point to 1,936 in the first few minutes of trading Tuesday. The index had posted gains over the previous two days.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged down nine points, less than 0.1 percent, to 16,560. The Nasdaq composite fell two points, less than 0.1 percent, to 4,399.

U.S. government bond prices were little changed. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 2.43 percent.
