Uber Target Of Lawsuit By Philadelphia Cab Companies

In the latest legal challenge to ride-sharing service Uber Technologies Inc., a group of 45 Philadelphia taxicab companies have joined a suit alleging it of violating federal racketeering laws, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. "Not since the days of bootlegging has there been a criminal enterprise so brazen and open as to attract hundreds of millions of dollars in investment from investment bankers and to operate in blatant violation of federal and state law as Uber," the report quoted the complaint, filed Tuesday in federal court, as saying. The suit also names 18 individuals alleged to have operated illegally in Philadelphia, the report said, and accuses Uber of unfair competition against owners of taxi medallions. The suit coincided with news that South Korean prosecutors had indicted Uber Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick and his Korean partners for violating a public-transport law.
