U.S. Stocks Open Lower After Mixed Earnings

U.S. stocks opened modestly lower on Thursday as investors grappled with mixed earnings reports from bellwethers such as General Motors, Procter & Gamble and Caterpillar. Investors await a number of economic reports, including new-home sales. The S&P 500 opened 3 points, or 0.2%, lower at 2,104. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 50 points, or 0.3%, to 17,986. The Nasdaq Composite opened down 9 points, or 0.2%, to 5,026.65.
