U.S. Stocks Gain On Strong Data, Perceived Clinton Win At Debate

U.S. stocks rebounded Tuesday following two sessions of losses on a combination of robust economic data and a belief that Hillary Clinton outperformed Donald Trump in Monday's presidential debate. The S&P 500 rose 13 points, or 0.6%, to close at 2,159 while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 133 points, or 0.7%, to finish at 18,227. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 48 points, or 0.9%, to close at 5,305. The Conference Board said the consumer confidence index jumped to 104.1 in September from 101.8 in August, the highest since the summer of 2007. The Case-Shiller home price index rose 5.0% for the year in July while the Markit flash services purchasing managers index for September rose to 51.9 from 51 in August.
