Train passes for pope's visit being sold at Philadelphia stations; lottery left 20,000 unsold

Commuter train passes for Pope Francis' visit to Philadelphia are being sold at select stations after an online lottery left about 20,000 unsold.

Sales of the $10 one-day passes started Friday at the city's Jefferson and Suburban stations. They are also available at 18 outlying stations that'll be open during Francis' Sept. 26-27 weekend visit.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority is capping ridership at 175,000 for both days of the visit. About 330,000 of the available 350,000 passes were sold in the lottery.

The passes won't be required the day before Francis arrives, but riders shouldn't count on catching their normal morning train.

Mayor Michael Nutter says commuter trains will operate on a weekend schedule Friday, Sept. 25. Suburban Station will be closed starting 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24.
