Tony Award-winning musical revival of 'Pippin' to close in January on Broadway

The Broadway musical "Pippin" is packing up its tent and moving on.

Producers of the Tony Award-winning revival said Monday the show will end Jan. 4 at the Music Box Theatre. It will have played 709 performances and 37 previews, and quickly recouped its $8.5 million capitalization.

The show had slumped at the box office in recent weeks, struggling to earn half of its potential haul. A national tour is now playing across the U.S. and future productions are planned for London, Australia and Amsterdam.

"Pippin" is the whimsical coming-of-age story about the son of the first Holy Roman Emperor, boasting pop-rock songs by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. The revival was led by director Diane Paulus, who added jaw-dropping circus tricks.
