Things don't look so great in the Deep South. At least, that's the picture painted by a recent WalletHub survey, which shows that this section of the country is home to the saddest states in America.

Using data provided by personal interviews, proprietary information, and government data, WalletHub ranked all 50 states and the District of Columbia in six general areas, across 25 different metrics. When all of the scores were tallied, the South did not fare well.

Poor economic conditions, poor health, and a general sense of a disconnected community all combined to sink this part of the country to the bottom of the list. Find out which five earned this dubious distinction by viewing the slideshow below.
