Tenet Healthcare adds Saint Mary's Hospital in Waterbury to acquisition plans

Tenet Healthcare, which already is seeking to purchase a majority share of Waterbury Hospital, has announced plans to acquire Saint Mary's Hospital as well.

Chad Wable, Saint Mary's president, tells the Republican-American newspaper (http://bit.ly/1meX3rC ) the two hospitals would remain independent, but would share resources and services.

Tenet is a Dallas-based hospital chain with 79 acute-care hospitals and 189 outpatient facilities in 16 states.

It is also seeking to acquire Bristol Hospital and Healthcare Group, and the Eastern Connecticut Health Network, which includes Manchester Memorial and Rockville General hospitals.

Saint Mary's 19-member board of directors unanimously approved the proposed acquisition last week. The financial terms have not been released.

The sale of the Catholic hospital requires state and federal regulatory approvals and canonical approval from the Vatican.
