South Dakota spring wheat harvest reported at 88 percent; trails 5-year average and 2013 pace

Spring wheat harvest in South Dakota is lagging behind totals from last year at the time and the five-year average.

The Agriculture Department says in its weekly crop report that spring wheat harvested was at 88 percent, behind the five-year average and last year's figure of 99 percent.

Barley harvested was at 89 percent, trailing the five-year average of 98 percent and the 96 percent figure from last year.

Pasture and range conditions were rated 12 percent excellent, 56 percent good, 26 percent fair, 5 percent poor and 1 percent very poor.

The report says below-normal temperatures persisted across most of the state.
