Schumer to IP: Divide former mill site in upstate New York to boost property's sale potential

Sen. Charles Schumer is asking International Paper to separate two old landfills at a former upstate New York plant from the rest of the property in an effort to make the site more attractive to potential buyers.

Memphis, Tennessee-based IP shut down its mill in Corinth, in the southeastern Adirondacks, in 2002 after more than a century of operation. Local officials have been trying to redevelop the 357-arce property ever since.

Schumer says the presence of two landfills on the site have been a "deal breaker" because anyone buying the property would have to assume the environmental liability of the landfills.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls (http://bit.ly/1EtQpXZ ) reports that Schumer has written to IP's CEO, urging the company to agree to sell the property without the buyer having to take the landfills as part of the deal.
