RhodeMap economic development plan on hold after concerns raised; speaker seeks more time

A state-mandated economic development plan years in the making is on hold in Rhode Island after critics called it flawed and the House speaker requested more time to review it.

RhodeMap RI lays out a long-term vision for sustainable growth that looks broadly at the relationships between the economy and housing, transit, the environment, digital infrastructure and more.

The expansive plan says the demographically changing state should play to its strengths, reinvigorate cities and foster an "inclusive economy," among other goals. It was funded through a $1.9 million federal grant.

Critics say the plan is misdirected and wouldn't help the economy. Some say it's ill-timed ahead of a new gubernatorial administration.

The planning director says the plan is misunderstood and its timing was set by the legislature.
