Polycom Launches Videoconferencing Apps
Video and voice communication company Polycom (NASDAQ:PLCM) announced on Monday that it will launch videoconferencing apps for various mobile platforms and tablets in 2011.
Polycom’s app for Samsung’s Galaxy mobile platform will be in direct competition with Cisco Systems, and it is expected to launch during the current quarter. Polycom said the new technology should offer a positive impact on sales in the first quarter of 2011.
The Galaxy platform will run on Google's (NYSE:GOOG) Android software. Polycom has plans to make BlackBerry and Windows Mobile 7 apps available using Android as well, according to a Reuters report.
In addition to Cisco, Skype may also rise as a competitor in the space, as it has partnered with LG Electronics and Panasonic to offer Internet video on some televisions.
