Philadelphia university mistakenly sends acceptance letters to 500 students denied admission

Hundreds of students who received acceptance letters from Drexel University in Philadelphia are now being told they were sent by mistake.

WTXF-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1OfTAbE ) Drexel University mailed the letters to nearly 500 people who had already been denied admission or had incomplete applications.

Tearra Bookard tells the station she received her acceptance letter three weeks after she was denied admission.

The 17-year-old high school senior from West Philadelphia says she told friends and family about the good news only to receive an email seven hours later notifying her of the mistake.

This isn't the first time Drexel has gotten applicants' hopes up.

In 1994, the university mistakenly sent early acceptance letters to 25 students. The university called the students back to tell them of the mistake.
