Obama to meet with pro-trade Democrats from Senate and House amid steps to salvage fast-track

President Barack Obama has scheduled a White House meeting with pro-trade Democrats to discuss how to salvage his ability to complete trade negotiations with 11 Pacific Rim nations.

Wednesday's meeting comes as congressional officials say the House will try as early as Thursday to revive White House-backed trade legislation that pro-labor Democrats blocked last week.

Only 28 House Democrats and 14 Senate Democrats have sided with Obama.

At stake is a measure that would allow Congress to approve or reject future global trade deals, but not change them. That power would allow the Obama administration to wrap up the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Renewal of a program that helps workers who lose their jobs because of imports would become part of a separate bill.
