Obama to appoint David Cohen, sanctions architect at Treasury, to be deputy CIA director

President Barack Obama is tapping the current U.S. "sanctions czar" to be the No. 2 in command at the CIA.

The White House says David Cohen is Obama's pick for deputy director of the CIA. He's currently the Treasury Department's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence. He's been the architect of the Obama administration's economic sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Cohen worked previously as an attorney handling white-collar criminal defense, civil litigation and money laundering cases.

He'll replace outgoing CIA Deputy Director Avril Haines. Obama has named Haines as his deputy national security adviser in the White House

Director of National Intelligence James Clapper says Cohen will bring dedication, intellect and leadership to the CIA.
