NYC mayor notes police reforms in year since Eric Garner died after chokehold

Mayor Bill de Blasio says he has faith in reforms made to the New York Police Department as the anniversary of Eric Garner's chokehold death approaches.

De Blasio on Monday noted that all officers are being retrained on how to handle street confrontations and that the department is emphasizing improving relations with the public.

A police officer put the unarmed, black Garner in a chokehold during a confrontation on a Staten Island street on July 17, 2014.

A cellphone video captured Garner saying, "I can't breathe!" 11 times as he was restrained.

He died a short time later, leading to sweeping protests. An autopsy concluded he died in part from neck compressions from the chokehold.

A grand jury later declined to indict the white officer.
