New data show Massachusetts ranks high in consumer spending, including health care expenses

New federal data show that per-person consumer spending in Massachusetts was the highest of any state in 2012 as the economy continued to rebound from the Great Recession that ended five years ago.

Massachusetts' consumer spending rose 12 percent to about $47,300 a person from 2009 to 2012. Only Washington, D.C., had a higher average in 2012 — $59,400. The Bay State's increase beat the national per-person spending increase of 10.7 percent from 2009 to 2012.

Massachusetts residents also spent more per-person on health care — about $8,800 — in 2012 than residents of any other state.

Massachusetts' per-person spending total also included $8,500 for housing and utilities and $1,350 for gasoline and other energy goods.

The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis on Thursday released state-by-state estimates on consumer spending.
