Michigan gets $6.2 million in US Labor Department aid to train people for jobs in growth areas

The U.S. Labor Department says it's giving Michigan $6.175 million under a national program to help laid-off workers train for jobs in high-demand industries.

The department said Thursday that it's making about $155 million in grants to 32 states and the Cherokee tribe to start or expand job-training programs for laid-off workers.

The department says that Michigan is among 12 states that are getting the maximum available grant of $6.175 million under the Job-Driven National Emergency Grant program.

The government says the grants will go to "create or expand employer partnerships that provide opportunities for on-the-job training" such as apprenticeships or other training that results in "an industry-recognized credential."
