Michelle Obama: Pretty pumps are nice, but fashion success takes hard work, risk and failure

Michelle Obama says fashion is about more than a pretty pair of heels or a nice hemline.

The fashion-conscious first lady says success in the industry takes a lot of hard work, risk-taking and a willingness to accept failure.

Mrs. Obama commented Wednesday after welcoming students who are interested in pursuing careers in the industry to the White House. Designers Jason Wu, Lela Rose and Zac Posen were among the fashion industry professionals who tutored students at workshops that covered such areas as construction, fashion journalism and wearable technology.

The first lady says she learned from working closely with designers — such as Wu — that the finished design comes from a long and difficult process.

Wu designed both of Mrs. Obama's inaugural ball gowns.
