Mexico president faces new questions after report he bought home from government contractor

Mexico's president is facing new questions about his personal assets after a report that he bought a home from a businessman whose company won government contracts worth millions of dollars.

The Wall Street Journal report says President Enrique Pena Nieto bought the country club house from Roberto San Roman shortly after becoming governor of Mexico state in 2005.

It says San Roman's construction company won over $100 million in state government contracts between 2005 and 2011, and at least 11 federal contracts of unspecified value since Pena Nieto became president in 2012.

Pena Nieto's office said Wednesday in a statement that the purchase of the $372,000 house was legal and it appears in his declared assets. It added that he does not participate in the assigning of public works contracts.
