Markets Right Now: US stocks edge lower

Stocks are moving slightly lower in midday trading on Wall Street, led by declines in energy stocks as the price of crude oil sinks.

Mining and materials stocks also fell early Monday as the prices of copper and other metals decline.

Murphy Oil fell almost 4 percent and Freeport-McMoRan lost 3 percent.

Benchmark U.S. crude oil fell 3 percent to $47 a barrel.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 41 points, or 0.2 percent, to 18,512. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 4 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,179. The Nasdaq composite slipped 7 points, or 0.1 percent, to 5,231.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.54 percent.

Mining and materials stocks also fell early Monday as the prices of copper and other metals decline.

Murphy Oil fell almost 4 percent and Freeport-McMoRan lost 3 percent.

Utilities and health care stocks were the only sectors to rise.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 74 points, or 0.4 percent, to 18,478. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 6 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,176. The Nasdaq composite slipped 12 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,224.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.55 percent.
