IRS Says Thieves Stole Tax Information From 100,000 Americans
The Internal Revenue Service said thieves used an online service provided by the agency to get access to information from more than 100,000 taxpayers, The Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press reported Tuesday. The IRS said thieves accessed a system called "Get Transcript" and the service has been temporarily shut down. The agency said thieves cleared a security screen that required knowledge about the taxpayer, including Social Security numbers.
