Humana posts 3Q profit, results miss Wall Street estimates

Humana Inc. (HUM) on Friday reported third-quarter net income of $290 million.

On a per-share basis, the Louisville, Kentucky-based company said it had profit of $1.85.

The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.01 per share.

The health insurer posted revenue of $12.24 billion in the period, which also fell short of Street forecasts. Analysts expected $12.32 billion, according to Zacks.

Humana expects full-year earnings in the range of $7.40 to $7.60 per share.

Humana shares have climbed 36 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen almost 10 percent. The stock has risen 46 percent in the last 12 months.
