U.S. financial markets notched modest gains Friday after a quiet, post-holiday day of trading. The gains nudged the Dow Jones industrial average and Standard & Poor's 500 index to all-time highs. Utilities stocks were among the biggest gainers, while energy stocks declined as oil prices fell.

The S&P 500 index is up 18.12 points, or 0.9 percent.
