Hiring so far in 2014 has ranged broadly across many US industries

This year's hiring boom hasn't been just about a couple of standout industries. All major sectors have posted impressive gains, reflecting the broad strength of the U.S. economy.

Leading the charge have been professional and business services, a category that includes higher-paying jobs such as accountants and engineers. The sector added 631,000 jobs from January to November. Education and health services added 408,000, and leisure and hospitality 408,000.

Overall, U.S. employers added 321,000 jobs in November. So far this year, job gains have averaged 241,000 a month, putting 2014 on track to be the strongest year for hiring since 1999.

The unemployment rate stayed at 5.8 percent, the lowest level since July 2008.
