HBO Now Breaks 1 Million Subscriber Mark; Analyst Says
While Time Warner Inc's HBO has not reported any specific numbers on how many paying subscribers its stand-alone streaming service HBO Now has accumulated since its launch just over two months ago, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield is putting the number anywhere from 850,000 to 1 million subscribers. The big question after the service's debut, according to Greenfield, was whether the 1 million customers who signed up for the 30-day free trial would stick around. Using the HBO Now Apple Inc. iOS app rankings--averaging between No. 8 and 9 on iPhones and No. 5 on iPads--Greenfield surmised the subscriber number was about 850,000. According to Greenfield, the most HBO Now usage likely comes from iPads and Apple TV, but there's no app store rankings for the Apple TV. This, coupled with the unknown number of subscriptions via Cablevision Systems Corp. , led Greenfield to believe the number could be near 1 million.
