Germanwings Jet Crashes In French Alps With 148 On Board: Reports
A jet operated by Deutsche Lufthansa AG subsidiary Germanwings has crashed in the French Alps, media reports said Tuesday. The Airbus A320 was carrying 142 passengers and six crew members on a flight from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, but those numbers have not been confirmed. The low-cost carrier's plane went down near the small village of Barcelonnette, in the Digne area, which is difficult to reach, according to reports. In a post to Twitter, Germanwings said it is aware of the media reports but does not have any confirmed information. Airbus Group NV echoed those comments in its own Twitter post. The German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation plans to send three officials to aid France's crash probe, a spokesman for the agency told the Wall Street Journal. Lufthansa shares fell 4.3% after reports of the crash, while Airbus shares lost 2.3%. (This report has been corrected to reflect the number of people thought to be on board.)
