Driving conditions difficult or severe on some highways as latest winter storm hits New Mexico

The Albuquerque public school system is closing all of its schools due to a winter storm that has left many highways and roads around the state covered with ice and snow.

The Albuquerque district initially closed only schools in the east mountains Friday but later announced the closure of all schools. Rio Rancho schools also are closed.

Albuquerque police say road conditions are terrible, particularly on Coors Boulevard near I-40.

Elsewhere, highways with severe or difficult driving conditions Friday morning included a 161-mile stretch of Interstate 25 between Glorieta and Raton Pass in northern New Mexico and a 155-mile stretch of Interstate 40 between Milagro and the Texas line.

The state Department of Transportation said crews were plowing, salting and cindering.

Another storm with significant snowfall is expected Friday night.
